The Desired Results access Project
Key Activities for 2009-10

The Desired Results System is an accountability initiative of the California Department of Education (CDE) developed to determine the effectiveness of its child development and early childhood special education services and programs. Central to the Desired Results System are the Desired Results Developmental Profiles (DRDP), the assessment instruments that measure children’s progress for the child assessment component of the Desired Results Assessment System. The Desired Results access Project assists CDE’s Special Education Division (SED) in implementing the DRDP Assessment System to measure the progress of California’s preschool-age children with IEPs.

The Desired Results access Project provides opportunities for professional development; guidance materials that support the implementation of the Desired Results Assessment System; and research and evaluation activities that lead to data-informed improvements to the system. Highlights of 2009-2010 activities are described below.

Implementation and Professional Development Activities

  • Assist CDE’s Special Education Division in implementing the transition to the use of the DRDP access as the single DRDP assessment tool for preschool special education.
  • Support Special Education Local Plan Areas (SELPAS) in accessing training and professional development activities.
  • Develop additional online learning modules.
  • Produce new and updated guidance materials.
  • Collaborate with CDE’s Child Development Division and other state agencies to
  • Align the Desired Results Assessment System for preschool special education with the Preschool and Infant/Toddler Foundations.

Research Activities

  • Explore use of DRDP access with Part C programs. This research examines whether the DRDP access can be used for progress monitoring as a socially valid instrument for children birth to 3 with IFSPs receiving special education or related services through LEAs.
  • Align the DRDP access with the Preschool and Infant Toddler Learning Foundations.
  • Develop new tools for the use of DRDP data for SELPAs, Districts, and teachers.
  • Conduct ongoing studies of the psychometric properties and features of the DRDP access instrument. These activities extend understanding of the structure, reliability, item invariance, and dimensionality of the instrument for use with preschool children with IEPs.
  • Enhance the Special Education Desired Results System (SEDRS) – Improvement in Data Collection and Reporting: The SEDRS web-based data reporting system is being revised to enhance functionality and reporting procedures.
